Two Not-to-Be-Missed Presentations at WAHA’s Annual Membership Meeting

Sunday, April 6, 2014 -  4:00-7:00 p.m.

WAHA’s most important Membership Meeting is just around the corner – Sunday, April 6th, and I want to encourage all of our members to attend. We will be asking for your input as to the future direction of your organization - from the people who matter most, our members!

You won't want to miss the opportunity to see this gorgeous house!  In addition,  Derek Japha will share a short presentation on fighting commercial corridor blight along West Adams Boulevard, and Jett Loe will be previewing “Untold LA,” his incredible digital photo album on Historic West Adams.

We’ll be gathering at (and touring) one of Lafayette Square’s grand manses, the McCoy Residence, an unusual 1916 transitional Craftsman with Italian Renaissance influences. When rancher Charles B. McCoy and his philanthropist wife, Helen, moved from their 15,000-acre spread in Ventura County to Los Angeles, they hired architect Charles Wagner to design an imposing showcase home right on the corner of St. Charles Place and Virginia Road. While its distinctive broad sweep of horizontal lines are reminiscent of the Craftsman/Prairie style, what makes this home unique are its green tile roof, wide glazed brick piers on the wrap-around porch, and pairs of Tuscan columns crowned by uniquely stylized capitals.  The interior similarly boasts a mix of Craftsman -- including massive Batchelder-tiled fireplaces -- and Venetian design elements. Our hosts, Janel Glover and Howard Bennett, have lovingly restored the McCoy Residence,  and have graciously agreed to open their doors to WAHA for the most important membership meeting of the year.

In between the two wonderful presentations, we will conduct our Membership meeting which will include an open Q&A, a member survey, and will culminate in our Board member election.  Our neighborhood has many issues before it.  Some still focus on the restorations of our beautiful homes, and the preservation of the historic fabric of our area.  But we also have new issues that are taking prominence, such as the evolution at our four local oil drilling locations with acidization and fracking techniques being introduced into these sites, long-present in our midst.  Is this subject an appropriate topic in which WAHA should be involved, or should our focus be primarily directed toward preservation?  We want to hear from you!

This is a potluck and your homemade dishes are welcome, but we would also like to encourage you to consider supporting Your Local West Adams Businesses and  Bringing A Favorite Dish From a Local Eaterie.   As usual, WAHA will provide beverages.
